Heavy metal band band the Scorpions got a stinger of a lesson: Don’t get drunk on a plane and drop trou when you land, especially if your point of arrival is Dubai.
Earlier this month, Scorpion’s drummer, James Kottak, downed five glasses of wine on a five hour flight from Moscow to Dubai, en route to Bahrain where the band were scheduled to play that country’s Formula One grand prix.
While in the transit lounge, Kottak, accompanied by a friend, somehow got turned around and ended up going the wrong way. He
started swearing and talking about “non-educated Muslims”, then flashed his middle finger at Pakistani passengers. Police said he also exposed his behind.
He also reportedly commented on the smell in the transit, saying:
What is that disgusting smell?
The National reports that
a 27-year-old employee at the airport, said: ‘When he [Kottak] saw the Pakistani and Afghani passengers, he covered his nose and said that there was no way he will travel with them.’
According ot witnesses, Kottak also dropped his pants and asked people to touch his backside. However the drummer claimed at his trial
This is not true – I just lifted my shirt up to show the tattoo on my back..a spontaneous act.
Kottak was sentenced yesterday to a month a in jail for insulting Islam and flipping the bird. While he admits to drinking, he says he never said or did such a thing. (Ironic side note: The Scorpion’s 1982 album is titled Blackout)
The Scorpions have dates scheduled May 1-4, which will probably have to be canceled. Their tour resumes June 13th, which will give Kottak time to serve his sentence and presumably dry out. Or for the the band to find a replacement.
(I wonder if if the Scorpins will be suing the airline for serving Kottak too much booze? And really, shouldn’t there be a limit on alcohol served on a plane?)
