With over gajillion users, and as useful tool of law enforcement, the NSA, marketers, cats and their humans, Facebook is a huge part of everyday life and fraught with complex social rules and seemingly arbitrary community standards. Usually Facebook’s actions don’t affect me personally, but pro-dog fighting pages will get me riled up, and Facebook censoring art, legitimate journalism and editorials ticks me off. Especially when they ban a journalist (full disclosure: who happens to be my housemate), for posting a link to photo essay about drug abuse which (oh noes!) shows a naked breast in a non-porny context, and when Facebook takes down a post calling out racism in the Academy Awards process as a violation of community standards, yet allows an absolutely vile page about “Jewish ritual murder” to stay up.
I am not gonna get into a whole discussion about murder of Palestinians by Israeli bombings, Zionism, West Bank settlements, or Scarlett Johansson and the bubbling controversy surrounding her endorsement of a soda machine. Those issues are divorced from a page which claims that Jews are responsible for murdering Christian and Islamic children in order to use their blood in rituals–this page, Jewish Ritual Murder, which uses the Facebook URL truthaboutjews. The phase “truth about Jews” covers a lot ground, but ritual murder just really isn’t part of it, unless you want to consider that the Inquisition and Holocaust were in fact the ritual murder of Jews.
Creepy. Just creepy. Nasty. Horrid. And even weirder, creepier, nastier and more horrid: A friend who reported the page got this response:
This page wasn’t removed.
Thank you for taking the time to report something that you feel may violate our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment. We reviewed the page you reported for containing hate speech or symbols and found it doesn’t violate our Community Standards.
Note: If you have an issue with something on the Page, make sure you report the content (e.g. a photo), not the entire Page. That way, your report will be more accurately reviewed.
We understand you still may not want to see this Page. Here are a few things you can do…
How is page that speciously and falsely claims a specific ethnic group murders others as part of their lifestyle/religion not a hate crime? Primarily citing decades-old news reports and World War II propaganda, plus a dubious article from Russia, this page, which has 227 likes at this writing and hasn’t been active since 2012 (didn’t FB institute a cull, sending out a “you will be purged if our page is isn’t busy email a while ago), purports that “occult Jews” murder children to use their blood in their rituals. The page’s creator claims that not all Jews do this, only the occult ones (wtf is an occult Jew? I’m familiar with crypto-Judaism). It then manipulates disparate reports to implicate B’nai B’rith, the ADL, Russian Hasidim, and a World War II Jewish boycott of German businesses as part of this (fictional) murderous underground, while casting shadowsy aspersions on a New York synagogue. The page also links to Jewish Ritual Murder and about Neofit Cavsocalviţiu’s book ” Înfruntarea jidovilor, 1803″ in English” on Scribd (since removed by Scribd). The Facebook page creator claims Cavsocalviţiu’s book was
Printed by the order of the minister of domestic affairs of RUSSIA
Also included, an article about confessions of ritual murder obtained under torture from 1100 to 1500. Because we all know how reliable those confessions are.
My housemate’s ban was lifted after 24 hours. Facebook apologized for removing the post about racism and the Academy Awards. But why they allow pages like this to stay up is a mystery.
