Last night Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen joined The Late Night Show with Jimmy Fallon to weigh in on the scandal otherwise known as “Bridgegate” currently consuming the life and times of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
Jimmy Fallon set the scene and then Bruce appeared by his side, both men with guitars in hand. Wearing matching denim jackets with the sleeves cut off, aviators and red bandannas (Bruce would later describe this as “a good look”), the duo crooned a remixed version of Springsteen’s hit song Born to Run.
Gawker has a solid overview for those still stuck in traffic or otherwise still unaware of the scandal (but how can that be with DSWright’s coverage?!). Essentially, it is a story of political retribution and the abuse of power, all seemingly orchestrated by a lone Christie aide who has now been decidedly thrown under the bus.
Heartbreak, highways, truckers and mystique– the entire affair has all the makings of a solid song.
What makes this even more compelling art is the fact that it is well documented that Chris Christie is essentially Bruce Springsteen’s biggest fan. Out of the 130+ shows he’s attended, as far as we know he’s only fallen asleep at one, during which Born to Run was performed.
Nonetheless– while the Governor of New Jersey might not be willing to take ownership of his part in this scandal, he’s more than willing to confess being brought to tears by “The Boss”.
Those were simpler times:
Always on the receiving end of a rather ambivalent Springsteen — due to their political differences — it took a bridge and Christie’s recent woes to earn him the scorn of his idol who crooned last night:
Governor let me in I want to be your friend there’ll be no partisan divisions
Let me wrap your legs round your mighty rims and relieve your stressful condition
You got Wall Street masters stuck cheek to cheek with blue collared truckers and man I really gotta take a leak
But I can’t I’m stuck in Governor Chris Christie’s Fort Lee New Jersey Traffic Jam
Other choice lyrics included:
In reference to Governor Christie’s epic press conference reacting to the scandal:
It was longer than one of my own damn shows
In reference to the impact of said scandal:
‘Till then you’re killing the working man who’s stuck in Governor Chris Christie’s Fort Lee New Jersey Traffic Jam
And what everyone stuck in traffic was likely thinking during the scandal:
I gotta take a leak… down in Jersey land
It’s almost enough to make you feel sorry for the guy but then you remember that he’s being investigated for possibly using Hurricane Sandy relief money to subsidize campaign ads, then you feel compelled to start shouting for an encore and/or a rendition of Free Bird.
